"THE MOST important news for those advising travellers to Mozambique is that the road from South Africa to Vilanculos via Maputo has been repaired and is now fully accessible following the extensive flooding in February. We have not been washed away, and the islands are waiting to be explored!"
So says a spokesperson for Marlin Lodge, which - a member of the Classic Retreats portfolio and located on Benguerra Island off the Mozambican coast - is now open ready for the summer season.
Vilanculos is the nearest mainland town to Benguerra and clients can drive to the location, an easy seven-hour drive from Johannesburg if travelling the newly completed Maputo Corridor highway - and there is no need to use 4x4 vehicles, either. A secure area is provided for vehicles at Vilanculos from where visitors are then transported to the island by boat - a 30-minute transfer.
The Inhambane province - especially the greater Vilanculos area - is, reportedly, currently proving a drawcard for tourism investment, and a marine concession - currently under development - is expected to enhance the profile of the archipelago.
