THE 25000-hectare prime Serengeti land in Tanzania, purchased by Conservation Corporation Africa (CCA) on November 23 last year, will be used to develop land for wildlife in the area. The deal also enabled CCA to retain exclusive rights to a small clients' lodge on the land which caters for 16 guests. According to Kate Attwell from CCA, this deal made history as it was a direct agreement between the Masaai village of Ololosokwan and the conservation group, as opposed to the usual agreements which are struck between tour operators and local officials. This also meant that the village received 40% of the agreement fee compared with the 7% they would have received if the deal had been handled in the usual manner. (Adele MacKenzie)
