EUROPCAR is seeing strong demand from travellers across South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, particularly for more practical vehicle categories. Economy and compact cars remain the backbone of Europcar’s business, particularly as customers become more cost-conscious, although there has been a clear and steady shift toward SUVs. “Travellers want a bit more space, comfort and versatility, particularly for longer trips or when travelling with family,” Europcar told Travel News. Its popular rentals in Namibia and Botswana are SUVs and 4x4-type vehicles, which play a much bigger role given the nature of the travel and the road conditions. In South Africa, it is a bit more balanced with a mix of compact vehicles for city use and SUVs for leisure travel. Market needs Across its markets, Europcar caters for a wide range of traveller needs. “That includes everything from smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles right through to SUVs, luxury options, people carriers and vans. The larger vehicles and vans are especially important for group and family travel, which tend to peak over holiday periods.” Fuel efficiency has become a key factor in customer decision-making, the company says. “Locally, that means ensuring we have a strong mix of smaller, efficient vehicles available while still offering SUVs and larger vehicles where there is a clear need. In our region, the shift is more towards efficiency within traditional vehicle types rather than a big move into electric, mainly due to infrastructure realities, but it is something we continue to monitor.” Optimising Across its network, Europcar’s priority is optimising coverage rather than expanding rapidly. “From a network point of view, we have a strong footprint across South Africa with over 100 locations, and we are well represented in Namibia and Botswana across key airports and major towns. The focus for us is less about rapid expansion and more about ensuring the right coverage in the right locations, particularly where there is consistent travel demand.” Availability in smaller towns and tourism areas is another aspect that Europcar continues to manage actively. “It comes down to forward planning and making sure we move fleet into those areas ahead of peak periods. Places like coastal towns, game reserve access points or holiday destinations can see sharp demand spikes so we plan for that well in advance rather than reacting to it last minute.” Agent rewards Europcar’s travel agent loyalty programme, E-Rewards, remains an important part of how it supports the travel trade. “It is a simple, effective platform that rewards agents for bookings and it continues to drive good engagement. From our side, we see it as part of a broader approach to supporting agents, which also includes making sure they understand our products, our fleet and how to position us correctly to their clients.” “Customers want choice, value and ease of use, whether they are travelling for business or leisure. Our role is to make sure the fleet, the network and the customer experience all align to deliver that consistently.”
